Local Establishments

One of the first questions that we are often asked is "which is the way to the pub?" - and why not. A quiet drink in a good local pub is is one of the joys of Camping.

It is even better when it's at the end of a beautiful walk, which is exactly where The Red Lion comes in. This is one of those pubs that has been modernised, but hasn't become at all "Gastrofied." It has good, reasonably priced food, an interesting menu which is rich with local ingredients and a lovely bar and garden. In fact, it is a perfect local, in a historic building which has been made very comfortable.

It takes about 25 minutes to walk there from the camping ground and given that it is through some of the most beatiful countryside imaginable, well worth the effort. OK, the last five minutes are not that great, but it is the outskirts of the village. Of course, if you need to get there quickly (!), it is an easy drive and just five minutes or so from our entrance.

Although The Red Lion is the closest Pub as the crow flies, there are really pubs and Inns at all points of the compass. There are four pubs in Steyning (3 miles), our local town, which seems a little greedy given its size. That's at the last count of course; The Star, (130 High St - 01903 813078), The Chequers (41 High St - 01903 814437), The White Horse (23 High St - 01903 812347) and The Norfolk Arms (18 Church St - 01903 812215). Not only is this the only pub not in the High St, but the only one with its own rugby club - you can probably play if you like, they are always looking for fresh blood!

Also within walking distance, although it takes about 40 minutes, is The Fountain at Ashurst (01403 710219). It is famed for its lovely fireplaces, but has a nice garden as well. Food is good and quite reasonable as long as you choose wisely.

Another local is The Frankland Arms in Washington. Around 35 minutes. Well worth a visit is Bramber, winner of Sussex' best kept village on countless occasions. Here lies The Castle Inn (it has ten bedrooms if any prospective campers get cold feet!). It's a chocolate box pub, with a beautiful garden, in a chocolate box village. If you are a keen hanging basket gardner, this is the one for you!
